Fri 4th December, 2009
Who?Accountancy firm Cowgill Holloway, which has offices in Manchester and Bolton, with associated sites in Rossendale and Ramsbottom.
Did what?Merged with Liverpool firm Jackson UK, which was the former office of Hurst in the city before it changed its name at the beginning of 2009.
The business, led by managing partner Claire Hurst, was formerly the Liverpool office of Hurst before changing its name in February. The merger, which secures the jobs of the entire Jackson workforce, will boost Cowgill’s partner and staffing levels to 17 partners and 142 staff. Jackson said: “Joining Cowgill Holloway will allow us to enhance our service offering and our own growth.” Who advised? The lawyers helping on this one were DWF and George Davies.
Insider comment:Following mergers by regional firms Beever and Struthers with Waterworths, and Chadwick with Mazars, the topic has been flavour of the month in professional services circles. Many believe the trend of putting firms together will continue as managing partners looks to grow their firms and face the future with wider service lines. In this case, the smaller firm will take the Cowgill Holloway name in a move that will provide Claire Jackson and her team bigger opportunities. For Cowgill Holloway, it will give exposure to the Liverpool market. In a true merger there should be clear benefit for both sides.
